The
Book Project
Let me introduce a project I am currently working on that has become
near to my heart.
My premise is that all patrol cars responding to calls with domestic
violence or child neglect/abuse, or firefighters responding with
children 0-12 in the home, have books available to give to the
children. The deputies, officers, firefighters, would use the books
as a tool of diversion for the child from what is going on in their
little life at that moment. The books would be left behind as a gift
for the child following the call. We will have titles that span the
ages, stages and cultures of the community. I have taken this
project to Manatee County Sheriffs Office, Holmes Beach Police
Department and Cedar Hammock Fire Department and all have already
agreed to the project.
I have become a Literacy Partner with Scholastic so that I can
implement this project. The role of the businesses contributing to
this project will be to provide the books that the deputies and some
firefighters pass out to the children. Informational stickers of
some sort will be posted on the inside with emergency numbers as
well as the name of the contributing company for the books. I would
like to see if businesses would commit to a purchase at least twice
per year. Most of the businesses that have made the decision to
support this project have purchased $100.00 to $150.00 in books.
Since they are purchased at a wonderful discount through Scholastic
that amount goes a long way. The name is going to simply be "The
Book Project" so that we can serve a variety of public service
organizations. Please consider your role in this project and the
effect it might have on a young child’s life. Checks can be made out
to Scholastic and mailed to:
