Bicycle Helmet Check-Up Event

During the month of October, Cedar Hammock Fire Rescue conducted a bicycle helmet check up event at our local Elementary schools. If a child riding a bicycle did not have a helmet or their helmet was damaged we fitted the child and gave them a new one. The helmets were donated by the Epilepsy Foundation. This event was conducted by Fire Inspector Robert Austin and C-Shift officers and firefighters. During Fire Prevention Week we also conducted various fire safety programs in our school system and at day care centers. The Mission statement of Cedar Hammock Fire Rescue is to " Provide Quality Service with Pride, Commitment and Courage". We have a dedicated department that stands by this Mission Statement and an administration that backs the programs and supports community education.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2007

PRACTICE YOUR ESCAPE PLAN
In 2006, U.S. fire departments responded to 396,000 fires in residential properties and those fires caused 2,580 civilian deaths. Approximately 12,500 civilian injuries occurred in home fires and those fires caused $6.8 billion in property damage. Given the statistics, it is clear that having an escape plan is not enough. To escape safely from a home fire you've got to make sure that everyone in the home has practiced the plan as well.

FIREFIGHTING TESTING ON HOLD

Due to the unknown economic impact the tax reform issue will place on the fire districts in Manatee County, there will not be any firefighter testing in July. The current hiring list will remain active until such time as the Manatee County Fire Chiefs' Association deems it necessary to restart the testing process.

We are sorry for any inconvenience.

A-shift responded to an industrial accident at Manatee Community College. E-211 and Battalion 2 found
a Lull forklift, which had tipped over during transport of roofing materials to a second-floor roof.
The forklift landed on its right side on top of a hot tar pot. The tar pot was heated by a large propane cylinder.
Engine 211 secured the scene and eliminated hazards in sequence. The forklift operator rode the machine
to the ground and exited after it hit the tar pot. A mesh safety screen on the right side of the operator's
compartment in the forklift probably saved the man's life or prevented severe injuries.
The operator reported no injuries.
Shaken, not stirred.

All CHFR,

I would like to thank everyone who attended last night's ceremony held at our Station #1 facility. We had a great turnout of family, friends and fellow firefighters that showed the support for those who are undertaking new and challenging assignments and promotions.  The future continues to look bright for Cedar Hammock Fire Rescue.

Proud to be your "Chief,"

Randy Stulce
